World Poetry Day
21 March 2026 — Every star is a comma in a verse the sky is writing for you.
World Poetry Day is observed every year on 21 March. It was proclaimed by UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) at its General Conference in Paris in 1999. The aim is to support poetic expression, reading, writing and teaching of poetry, and to give a stronger voice to small and endangered languages. Poetry is one of the oldest forms of human speech, connecting people across cultures and centuries. Around the world the day is marked with readings, meetings with authors, workshops and school competitions. The date falls close to the March equinox (the moment when day and night are nearly equal in length), which marks the astronomical start of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Its closeness to spring often links the day with renewal and fresh beginnings. In the evening, it is a lovely time to look up at the stars and remember how many poems have been written about them.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure of a large feather drawn from bright dots and fine lines like a constellation, gliding across the night sky
