World Cleanup Day

20 September 2026 — Swish-swish! I sweep the orbit, you sweep the park and the beach!

World Cleanup Day is a citizen-led initiative in which people around the world collect litter from parks, forests, rivers and beaches. It began in Estonia: in 2008, thousands of volunteers cleared illegal dumps within a few hours in the “Let’s Do It!” campaign. The movement later went international and now brings together millions of people in more than 150 countries. Volunteers usually go out on the third Saturday of September, and in 2023 the UN General Assembly made it an official international day with a fixed date – 20 September. In 2026, 20 September falls on a Sunday, so many local cleanups will take place a day earlier, on Saturday 19 September. There is a sky connection too: tens of thousands of tracked objects, from dead satellites to fragments, circle the Earth as so-called space debris. Our little broom-comet winks at that problem, but the real cleanup starts in our own backyard.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of light dots and thin lines, shaped like a tiny comet with a broom-like tail, drifting across the sky like a moving constellation
