World Environment Day

5 June 2026 — Every great tree was once a tiny sprout. Let’s help it grow!

World Environment Day is observed every year on 5 June and is the United Nations’ largest global campaign for protecting nature. It was designated in 1972 by the UN General Assembly following the UN Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm, which opened on 5 June that year and was first marked in 1973. Each year brings a new theme and a different host country that anchors the main events. Themes have included plastic pollution, climate change, clean air, land restoration and the protection of wildlife. Around the world, people plant trees, clean up parks, rivers and beaches, and hold exhibitions, school lessons and public discussions. The day is a reminder that small everyday choices matter. The link to the sky is a natural one: 5 June falls shortly before the June solstice, when days in the Northern Hemisphere are longest and plants are in full growth. We all live beneath the same sky, and Earth is our only home.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation: a little sprout with two leaves rising from a small pot, drifting across the night sky on a soft cloud of stars
