The holidays of the sky

World Oceans Day

8 June 2026 — I swim through the sky like an ocean! Take care of the waters below.

World Oceans Day is observed every year on 8 June. The idea was first proposed in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. The United Nations officially recognised the day by a resolution in 2008, and it has carried international status since 2009. Each year has its own theme, and people around the world take part in beach clean-ups, exhibitions, school activities and online events. The oceans cover more than two thirds of Earth's surface, shelter an enormous variety of life and produce a significant share of the oxygen we breathe. They also regulate the climate by absorbing heat and carbon dioxide. The day reminds us how much our lives depend on them, and how plastic pollution, overfishing and warming threaten marine ecosystems. The link to the sky is symbolic: tides are driven mainly by the Moon's gravity, and for centuries sailors found their way by the stars. The fixed date is not tied to a solstice or a lunar phase.
