World UFO Day

2 July 2026 — Don't be scared, I'm just passing by! Give me a wave!

World UFO Day is observed on 2 July by people who love the mysteries of the sky. UFO stands for “unidentified flying object”: simply something in the air that an observer cannot explain right away. It does not mean an alien spacecraft. Most reports turn out to be aircraft, balloons, meteors, planets, satellites or optical effects. According to its organisers, the day is linked to the 1947 events near Roswell in the United States, while some enthusiasts celebrate on 24 June instead, recalling a sighting report from the same year. That is why the date differs from place to place. People organise talks, night-sky watching and gatherings of amateur astronomers. It is a nice excuse to look up, learn to recognise Venus, the International Space Station and shooting stars, and keep both our curiosity and a healthy dose of scepticism. This is an unofficial themed day, not an international holiday.
