World Football Day
25 May 2026 — A goal between two stars! Happy World Football Day!
World Football Day is observed every year on 25 May, having been proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2024. According to the UN, the date recalls the 1924 Olympic football tournament in Paris, which began on 25 May 1924 and, according to the UN, was the first international football tournament with teams from all regions of the world. The day highlights how the world's most popular game brings together people of different countries, cultures and generations. That is why children's tournaments, friendly matches and community projects promoting sport, inclusion and healthy living are held around the globe. The date is fixed and does not depend on the Moon or the solstices, but it gives the night sky a charming picture: a ball streaking past like a comet (an icy body with a glowing tail) and slipping neatly between two stars, as if scoring a goal in a goalpost made of light.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver ball made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation, streaking across the night sky with a faint comet tail of sparkling points
