World Philosophy Day

19 November 2026 · movable holiday — What lies beyond the stars? A good question is half the answer!

World Philosophy Day is observed under the auspices of UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, on the third Thursday of November. It was first celebrated in 2002. The aim is to encourage free, critical and shared reflection about the world and about ourselves, and to draw young people to the questions philosophy has asked since antiquity. Around the world the day brings lectures, debates, readings and open classes in schools, universities and libraries. Because the day is movable, the date changes each year: in 2026 it falls on 19 November. The link with the sky is as old as philosophy itself. Early Greek thinkers studied the stars to understand how the world is ordered. According to a well-known anecdote, Thales fell into a well while gazing at the heavens. So the question “What lies beyond the stars?” is a fine topic for an evening under a clear sky.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the night sky: a giant question mark of stars that slowly reshapes itself into a smiling crescent moon
