World Lake Day

27 August 2026 — The stars are mirrored in the lake – let's keep it clean!

World Lake Day is observed on 27 August and reminds us how much lakes matter to people and to nature. They supply drinking water, shelter fish, birds and plants, and are often places for work and rest. The day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly to draw attention to pollution, drying up and climate change, which threaten lakes. The world's deepest lake is Baikal, while Bulgaria and the wider Balkans have many glacial, mountain and coastal lakes, while the ancient tectonic Lake Ohrid is protected by UNESCO. The dragonfly is a fitting symbol for the day: its larvae live in water, and many species are sensitive to pollution, so their presence is often a sign of a healthy aquatic environment. In late August, as nights grow longer, a still lake becomes a mirror. On a clear, dark night it can reflect the Milky Way and the bright stars of the Summer Triangle.
