World Basketball Day
21 December 2026 — Two points! The planet just sank into Saturn's hoop!
On 21 December 1891, in Springfield, Massachusetts, the first basketball game was played. It was invented by physical education teacher James Naismith, who wanted a way for his students to stay active indoors during the winter. The first goals were peach baskets nailed to a gym balcony, and the ball had to be fished out by hand after every score. Today basketball is one of the most popular sports on Earth, and it has been an Olympic sport for men since 1936. The United Nations marks World Basketball Day to highlight the role of sport in health, cooperation and mutual respect. The date falls close to the December solstice in the northern hemisphere, when nights are longest and the stars stay visible the longest. That is why our ball-planet takes its shot among the stars, with Saturn's ring as the hoop.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and thin connecting lines, like a moving constellation: a small ball-planet bouncing across the night sky and dropping through a hoop shaped like Saturn's ring, leaving a trail of twinkling stars
