Saint Joseph's Day — Father's Day
19 March 2026 — Happy Father's Day, dads! Cream doughnuts for anyone who catches up with me!
In Italy, Father's Day is celebrated on 19 March, the feast of Saint Joseph, husband of Mary and, in Christian tradition, a carpenter. For this reason he is honoured as a protector of families and craftsmen, and fathers receive greetings, gifts and drawings from their children. Food plays a big part in the day. Many regions make traditional sweets, the best known being zeppole di San Giuseppe (fluffy fried or baked doughnuts with custard cream and a cherry). In Sicily, tables or altars laden with many dishes, the tavole or altari di San Giuseppe, are set up, and guests, often people in need, are invited to share the meal. The date is fixed in the calendar and does not depend on the Moon. It falls just before the spring equinox, when day and night are nearly equal and the evening sky slowly shifts toward spring.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a kindly craftsman with a wood plane under one arm and a tray of puffy cream-filled doughnuts in the other hand
