Epiphany (Three Kings' Day)

6 January 2026 — The star shows the way – may goodness enter every home!

Epiphany, or Three Kings' Day, falls on 6 January. In the Western Christian tradition it recalls the visit of the wise men from the East to the infant Jesus, guided by a star. (In the Orthodox tradition, Epiphany marks the Baptism of Christ.) In Germany it is a public holiday in Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria and Saxony-Anhalt. It is the time of the Sternsingen (star singing) custom: children dressed as the three kings go from house to house with a large star on a pole, sing, and chalk a blessing above the door, for example 20*C+M+B+26: the year is split around the letters C, M and B, read as „Christus mansionem benedicat“ („May Christ bless this house“) and popularly as the initials of Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar. The children collect donations for other children in need around the world. The star links the feast directly to the sky: in the Gospel story, an extraordinary star leads the travellers. The day marks the end of the traditional Twelve Days of Christmas and is a gentle reason to look up.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: three small crowned child-shaped silhouettes walking in a line, the first carrying a tall pole topped with a large radiant star
