Saint Stephen's Day
26 December 2026 — Happy St. Stephen's Day! The boxes of treats are on their way to relatives.
Saint Stephen's Day, on 26 December, is a public holiday in Italy and the day after Christmas. It honours Saint Stephen, regarded as the first Christian martyr and mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles. In Italy it is a day for family: after the big Christmas lunch, relatives and friends visit one another, often finishing the Christmas leftovers, and panettone (a tall, soft yeast-leavened Christmas cake) is on the table. Many families take a stroll, and in some towns people visit nativity scenes. Some regions have their own local customs and dishes. The date is fixed in the Gregorian calendar, falling just after the winter solstice, when nights begin to shorten and the winter sky is full of bright constellations such as Orion.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine connecting lines, like a constellation: a small family walking together, carrying boxes and a tall domed festive cake, drifting slowly across the night sky
