The holidays of the sky

Saints Peter and Paul (Rome)

29 June 2026 — Happy feast day, Rome! The keys shine over the city.

On 29 June the Catholic Church honours the apostles Saints Peter and Paul. Christian tradition links both men with Rome, where they are said to have died as martyrs, so they are regarded as the city's patron saints. The day is a public holiday in Rome. In traditional iconography, Peter is often shown holding keys, while Paul carries a sword and a book. The feast is very old and has been celebrated since at least the fourth century. In the morning, the pope presides over a solemn Mass at the Vatican, during which new archbishops traditionally receive the pallium, a woollen band worn around the shoulders. In the evening, the city offers a fireworks display over the Tiber. The date follows the solar calendar and falls shortly after the summer solstice, so the days are long and the evening sky stays bright late into the night.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation: two crossed keys drifting across the night sky, wreathed in tiny flower-shaped star clusters
