Saint Nicholas Day
6 December 2026 — A calm wind and a warm lantern for all who are on their way. Happy St. Nicholas Day!
Saint Nicholas of Myra was a fourth-century Christian bishop in Lycia, in present-day Turkey. The Church honours him as a protector of sailors, fishermen and travellers, which is why many Bulgarian families gather on this day around a fish dinner. In Bulgaria the feast falls on 6 December and is especially cherished in fishing and coastal communities; people named Nikolay celebrate their name day on the same date. Tradition calls for a baked carp, often stuffed with rice or walnuts, and no meat on the table. In the Netherlands, Germany and other European countries the day and its eve are also linked to gifts for children, but our story keeps only a quiet boat with a lantern. The date is fixed, 6 December, and does not depend on the phases of the Moon. It falls at the start of meteorological winter, about two weeks before the winter solstice, when the nights are already among the longest of the year and the stars stay visible for many hours. A small lantern drifting along the Milky Way seems a fitting light for the journey.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and thin lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a small fishing boat with a softly glowing lantern at its bow, sailing calmly along the Milky Way
