Saint George's Day

23 April 2026 · movable holiday — Happy feast day! May spring bring health and good roads.

Saint George is one of the most beloved Christian saints. According to tradition he was a soldier in the 3rd–4th century who stayed faithful to his faith. In Greece his day is 23 April, but if that date falls before Orthodox Easter or on Easter Sunday itself, the feast moves to Easter Monday. He is regarded as a patron of shepherds, farmers and soldiers. The celebration is especially well known in Arachova, near Delphi, where the local church is dedicated to him and he is the town's patron saint. There is a liturgy, a procession with icons and traditional costumes, songs, dances and contests. The feast comes at the height of spring, when nature awakens and the new farming season begins. The link to the sky lies in the calendar: the date depends on Orthodox Easter, which is calculated from the lunisolar cycle, as Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox, which the Orthodox Church reckons by the Julian calendar. This is why the feast sometimes moves.
