Saint Phanourios
27 August 2026 — Lost something? Many bake a phanouropita and ask Saint Phanourios for help.
Saint Phanourios is a revered saint in the Greek Orthodox tradition, especially on Rhodes and in Crete. He is regarded as a helper in finding lost things and lost hope. His memory is marked on 27 August. A special sweet cake, the phanouropita, is baked for him. It usually contains flour, sugar, olive oil, cinnamon, raisins and walnuts, sometimes with spices such as clove. The cake is taken to church to be blessed, then shared with family and neighbours. It is baked in the saint's memory, with a prayer for help in finding something lost and for the repose of departed loved ones; by tradition, also for the soul of the saint's mother. His veneration began after his icon was found on Rhodes around 1500; almost nothing is known of the saint's own life beyond tradition. The feast has a fixed date: in Greece it is kept on 27 August, while churches and communities following the old (Julian) calendar mark it on 9 September. On Astronativa, a symbol drifts across the sky: the cake and a lit candle, a gentle light at the end of summer.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation: a round, gently glowing festive cake drifting across the night sky
