Saint Andrew's Day
30 November 2026 — Blessed Saint Andrew's Day! May the light guide you through the dark.
Saint Andrew the First-Called was one of the twelve apostles of Christ. According to the Gospels, he was a fisherman from Galilee and the brother of the apostle Peter. Church tradition links him with preaching in the lands around the Black Sea and with Patras in Greece, where, according to tradition, he was martyred. The Orthodox Church honours his memory on 30 November, and in Greece the day is especially solemn in Patras, of which he is the patron saint. The great Church of Saint Andrew there is said to keep part of his relics and is among the largest Orthodox churches in the country. In Greece the feast has a fixed date – 30 November in the civil calendar – and does not depend on the Moon. Orthodox churches that follow the old (Julian) calendar mark it on 13 December. His symbol in the sky is a fishing boat with a lantern – a nod to the apostle's trade as a fisherman and an image of light that guides through the dark. Greek Christian communities mark the day with church services, and everyone named Andrew, Andreas or a related name celebrates their name day.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver fishing boat made of luminous dots and fine connecting lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky
