Saint Barbara
4 December 2026 — With sweet wheat and a kind heart, a blessed Saint Barbara's Day!
On 4 December the Eastern Orthodox Church honours Saint Barbara, an early Christian martyr. Tradition places her in Nicomedia (in present-day Turkey), where she stayed faithful to her beliefs despite her father's will. The historical details of her life are uncertain, and most accounts come from hagiography (traditional saints' lives). In Greece the day is marked with “varvara”, a sweet dish of boiled wheat with pomegranate seeds, walnuts, raisins, almonds and sugar or honey. In northern Greece families prepare it at home, take it to church and share it with neighbours and friends as a blessing and a wish for good health. The dish also recalls winter sowing: grain placed in the earth carries the hope of new life. The feast falls in early December, when nights are long and the stars shine clearly. That is why the sky carries not a human figure but a symbol: a bowl of star-grains.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver bowl made of pale glowing dots and fine lines, like a constellation, drifting across the night sky
