Saint Cecilia's Day

22 November 2026 — May the stars ring with a song for all musicians today!

On 22 November the Catholic Church honours Saint Cecilia, an early Christian martyr who over the centuries became the patron saint of music and musicians. Her image as a musician comes from a medieval tradition that she sang to God in her heart while instruments played. Reliable historical details about her life are scarce and many accounts come from later legend.

In Mexico the day is especially dear to the mariachis, the street ensembles of violins, trumpets, vihuela and the guitarrón (a large bass guitar). In Mexico City, musicians gather at Plaza Garibaldi to honour their patron, often with a Mass and songs. Mariachi music is inscribed by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The feast has a fixed date in the solar calendar and does not depend on the phases of the Moon. So every year on this November day we can look up and imagine a round dance of singing constellations.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation: a violin, a trumpet and a big guitarrón drift together in a slow circular dance across the night sky, trailing faint sparkling notes
