Saint Marina
17 July 2026 — A bright Saint Marina’s Day to you – health and peace in every home!
On 17 July, Greece honours Saint Marina, known in Western tradition as Saint Margaret of Antioch. According to tradition, she was a young Christian from Antioch in Pisidia who suffered for her faith in the early fourth century. In the Orthodox calendar her memory is kept on 17 July, while the Catholic Church marks her on 20 July. In Greece she is one of the most beloved saints: many churches and chapels bear her name, and Marina is a widely used given name. In villages the day is often celebrated with a panigiri (a village festival held around a church feast), with a church service, a shared meal, music and dancing. People light oil lamps (kandili) and bring flowers to church. The feast falls in the middle of summer, when nights are short and warm and the summer constellations shine overhead, making it a pleasant time for evening gatherings under the open sky.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the night sky: a small oil lamp (kandili) with a softly glowing flame, floating gently
