Candlemas

2 February 2026 — One small candle brings warmth even to the longest winter.

Candlemas is a Christian feast celebrated on 2 February, forty days after Christmas in the Western calendar. It recalls the presentation of the infant Jesus in the Temple in Jerusalem, where, according to the Gospel of Luke, the elderly Simeon welcomed him and called him a „light for revelation to the Gentiles“. That is why candles to be used in church and at home through the year are traditionally blessed on this day. In the United Kingdom, an old custom says that Christmas greenery should be taken down by Candlemas at the latest. The snowdrop, which often blooms in early February, is nicknamed „Candlemas bells“ because of this coincidence. The date falls roughly halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox, so for centuries it has been linked with the hope of lengthening days and the return of light. Eastern Orthodox churches that follow the Julian calendar mark the feast on 15 February, while the Bulgarian Orthodox Church also celebrates it on 2 February.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of pale glowing dots and fine lines, like a constellation: a single tall candle with a soft, steady flame, drifting slowly across the night sky
