Mid-Lent (Mi-Carême)

12 March 2026 · movable holiday — Hop! A little confetti in the middle of Lent – then back to the stars!

Mi-Carême (French for “mid-Lent”) is a French folk celebration held on the Thursday around the middle of Lent, 24 days before Catholic Easter. Lent is a season of restraint, so this day became a short, cheerful pause with masks, parades, music and confetti, a kind of small second carnival. In Paris in the late 19th century it grew famous for its large processions and for the election of a queen of the festival. Today the custom is more modest and survives mainly in certain towns and neighbourhoods, where children and adults put on costumes. The link to the sky is through the calendar: the date of Easter depends on the first full moon after the spring equinox (Easter is the following Sunday), and Mi-Carême is counted back from it. That is why the day moves every year; in 2026 it falls on 12 March.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of light dots and thin connecting lines, like a constellation, dancing across the sky in a simple carnival mask and a floppy pointed cap
