Candlemas

2 February 2026 — May a small light warm even the longest winter. Happy feast day!

Candlemas, known in Germany as Mariä Lichtmess, is celebrated on 2 February, forty days after Christmas. Christian tradition recalls how Mary and Joseph brought the infant Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem, where the elder Simeon called him a light for the nations. From this comes the custom of blessing candles in churches on this day, to be used in homes throughout the year. In the past, Candlemas marked the end of the Christmas season in Germany, and in some regions also the start of the farming year, when servants were paid and could change employers. The feast is tied to light as well: the days are now noticeably longer, and the date falls roughly midway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. In some regions, folk sayings about the weather on this day are still remembered. It is observed quietly and warmly.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver procession of small candle flames drawn from pale glowing dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting slowly and gently across the night sky
