Ascension Day (Spasovdan)
21 May 2026 · movable holiday — A light over the city: blessed Ascension Day and a happy Belgrade slava!
Ascension Day, known in Serbian as Spasovdan, is a Christian feast that commemorates the ascension of Jesus Christ into heaven, forty days after the Resurrection. For that reason it always falls on a Thursday, and its date changes every year together with Easter. Orthodox Easter is calculated using the Julian calendar and church tables: it falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon following 21 March in the Julian calendar (today that is 3 April in the Gregorian calendar). This full moon is calculated from tables, not observed. So Ascension Day is tied, if only approximately, to the movements of the Sun and the Moon. In 2026 it falls on 21 May. In Serbia, Spasovdan is also the slava (the patron feast day) of the city of Belgrade. It is marked with a church service and a litiya, a prayer procession carrying candles, icons and banners through the streets. Our sky procession is made only of lights and symbols, in respect for the feast: candles and a banner with a cross stand for faith and hope, while the eyes are lifted up toward the sky.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver procession made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation: a row of small candle flames follows a tall banner topped with a cross, gliding slowly across the night sky
