Sapporo Snow Festival

4 February 2026 · movable holiday — My snow castle has arrived! Hop on, the road is slippery!

The Sapporo Snow Festival takes place every year in early February in Sapporo, the main city of Hokkaido, Japan. It began in 1950, when local high school students built six snow statues in Odori Park. Since then it has grown into a showcase of huge snow and ice sculptures, some as tall as buildings, often depicting famous landmarks and scenes. The main sites are Odori Park in the city centre, Tsudome, and Susukino, where the ice sculptures are displayed. In the evening the sculptures are lit up and look like a frozen fairy-tale city. The exact dates are announced every year, and the festival lasts about a week. Early February brings long nights, and on clear, frosty evenings away from the city lights the stars shine especially bright. The large sculptures take about a month to build and are torn down right after the festival ends.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines like a constellation: a tall many-towered snow castle riding a sleigh, pulled by a row of little round snowmen, drifting slowly across the night sky
