Candlemas (La Chandeleur)
2 February 2026 — Flip the pancake, and hold a coin for luck!
La Chandeleur (Candlemas) is celebrated on 2 February, forty days after Christmas. In the Christian tradition it marks the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple. The name comes from the Latin for the feast of candles, and candles are blessed in churches on this day. In France it is also known as the day of crêpes. According to custom, you hold a coin in your free hand while flipping a crêpe in the pan, which is said to bring luck and prosperity for the year. The round golden crêpe recalls the sun and the full moon. The feast falls roughly halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox, when the days are visibly getting longer, so it is often linked with the return of light and the approach of spring.
