Sts Michael and Gabriel

8 November 2026 — May the light of this day watch over all who bear the names Michael and Gabriel.

On 8 November the Orthodox churches in Romania celebrate the Synaxis of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel and all the bodiless heavenly powers. In Romanian it is called Sfinții Mihail și Gavriil. It is a major church feast, marked in red in the calendar, and also one of the country's biggest name days: many people called Mihai, Mihail, Gavriil, Gabriel, Mihaela, Gabriela and related names receive greetings. Churches hold the Divine Liturgy, and many parishes and villages dedicated to the archangels celebrate their patron feast on this day. Families gather around the table and wish each other health. The date is fixed and does not depend on the Moon. In our sky the feast is shown by a symbol: a light feather drifting slowly down through the stars.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver feather made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation, drifting slowly and gently down across the night sky and leaving a faint trail of tiny stars
