The holidays of the sky

🕯️

Sts Constantine and Helen

21 May 2026 — Happy name day to all Constantines and Helens! May your evening be bright.

On 21 May the Eastern Orthodox Church honours Saints Constantine and Helen, who are called equal to the apostles. Emperor Constantine the Great is remembered for the Edict of Milan in 313, which granted Christians freedom of worship, and for convening the First Council of Nicaea in 325. His mother, Helen, is associated with pilgrimage to the Holy Land and the search for its sacred sites. In Romania the day is a major church feast (though not a public holiday), and Constantin and Elena are among the most common names, so many people celebrate their name day. People attend the Divine Liturgy, light candles and oil lamps, and families gather for a meal and congratulate those who bear the names. The date is fixed in the civil calendar, so it does not depend on the phases of the Moon. The two small lamps in the sky are a symbol of light and of remembrance of the two saints.

Flying across the sky: Two small ethereal bluish-silver oil lamps made of luminous dots and fine connecting lines, like a constellation, drifting side by side across the night sky
