St George's Day

23 April 2026 — With a green sprig on the gate, we welcome spring. Happy feast day!

Saint George is venerated as a martyr and protector, and his image as a horseman is among the most recognisable in Christian iconography. In Romania his day, 23 April, is called Sfântul Gheorghe and marks the turn to warmer weather and the start of the grazing season. Traditionally, green branches are hung on gates, doors and windows; they stand for the renewal of nature and carry good wishes for the home and the flocks. The day is closely tied to shepherds, and in many places flocks are taken out to pasture then. The feast has a fixed date, but if 23 April falls before Easter or on Easter Sunday itself, the celebration is moved to Easter Monday. This links it to the movable church calendar, which is calculated by the Julian calendar from the ecclesiastical spring equinox and the first full moon after it. The spring night sky at this time is full of bright constellations such as Leo and Virgo, and nights grow shorter and warmer.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of bright dots and fine lines, like a constellation: a rider on a horse glides across the sky, carrying a small green sprig, with soft glowing points tracing the horse's mane and the rider's cloak
