St Andrew's Day

30 November 2026 — Good evening! The wolf passes quietly – the garlic guards the home.

On 30 November, Romania and most Christian churches honour Saint Andrew the Apostle, called the First-Called, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus. Tradition says he preached in the lands around the Black Sea, including Dobruja, which is why Romanians regard him as the patron saint and “founder” of their Christian faith. Since 2012 the day has been a public holiday in Romania.

Folk belief also links him with wolves: St Andrew’s Day is said to be their feast, when they are at their strongest, and people avoid speaking of them. On the eve, households rub garlic on doors, windows and stables to protect the home and livestock from evil spirits and the undead (strigoi). The night is also associated with fortune-telling and beliefs about love and fertility.

The day falls at the end of November, when the nights are long and autumn turns to winter. It has a fixed date in the Gregorian calendar.
