Coming of Age Day

12 January 2026 · movable holiday — Welcome to adulthood, shining ones! Happy Coming of Age Day!

Coming of Age Day (Seijin no Hi in Japanese) is a national holiday in Japan, held on the second Monday of January. Since 2000 it has followed this movable rule; before that it was fixed on 15 January. It honours young people who have turned, or will turn, 20 during the school year. Japan lowered the legal age of adulthood to 18 in 2022, yet ceremonies still celebrate those reaching 20. Local governments hold formal gatherings where officials offer congratulations and encouragement. Many young women wear furisode, a kimono with long sleeves, while young men wear hakama (wide ceremonial trousers) or a suit. Afterwards come photos and reunions with friends. The custom is linked to the ancient genpuku rite, in which young nobles were declared adults. The holiday follows the Gregorian calendar and has no direct astronomical link, but it falls in midwinter, when long clear nights show the stars at their best.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a young woman in a long-sleeved furisode kimono, waving gently, her sleeves trailing like streams of starlight
