Saint Sava Day – Day of Spirituality

27 January 2026 — A book is a light – read, and you will see far!

Saint Sava Day is marked in Serbia on 27 January in honour of Saint Sava (c. 1175–1236), son of Grand Prince Stefan Nemanja, a monk on Mount Athos and the first archbishop of the autocephalous Serbian Church, established in 1219. He is remembered as an enlightener and the patron saint of schools. In the church calendar his feast falls on 14 January in the Julian calendar, which corresponds to 27 January in the Gregorian one. The day is devoted to education and spirituality. Schools hold celebrations with recitals, songs and plays; it is a working day for schools, but regular classes are replaced by the celebration. The church serves the Divine Liturgy. It is also the school slava – following the Serbian tradition of the slava (a patron-saint feast), schools celebrate him as their patron. There is no astronomical link: the date follows the church calendar rather than the Sun or the Moon. Our little student with a lamp and a glowing letter is a reminder that knowledge can guide us like a star on a winter night.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of bright dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a young student holding an open book and a small glowing oil lamp
