Sânziene (Midsummer)

24 June 2026 — I weave stars into my wreath – happy Sânziene!

Sânziene, also known as Drăgaica, is celebrated in Romania on 24 June, close to the summer solstice, and coincides with the Christian feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist. The name is thought to derive from the Latin Sancta Diana and refers to the sânziene, gentle fairy-like maidens of folklore who protect fields and fertility. On the eve of the feast, girls gather herbs and yellow flowers, especially lady's bedstraw (Galium verum), and weave them into wreaths. The wreaths are hung on doors and windows to protect the home, and are sometimes thrown onto the roof – if a wreath stays up, the girl is said to marry soon. In many villages bonfires are lit and fiery wheels are rolled. The same day is also marked as Universal Day of the Romanian Blouse (Ziua Universală a Iei), honouring the ia, honouring the embroidered traditional shirt as a symbol of national identity. Thus one of the shortest nights of the year brings together flowers, songs and folk costume under the summer sky.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a graceful maiden in a flowing gown, wearing a wreath of tiny golden-yellow lady's bedstraw blossoms shaped like small stars, moving lightly as if dancing
