Sts Peter and Paul
29 June 2026 — Happy feast day! The first apples are ripe.
On 29 June, churches honour the holy apostles Peter and Paul. The feast is very old and was already observed in Rome in the 4th century. For Orthodox Christians it ends the Apostles' Fast; churches on the New Calendar keep it on 29 June, those on the Old Calendar on 12 July. In Romania the feast of the holy apostles Peter and Paul is popularly known as Sânpetru. According to folk belief, from this day on people may eat apples of the new harvest. In some regions the first fruits are blessed and shared with relatives and the poor. The key is the well-known symbol of Saint Peter: in the Gospel of Matthew he is given the keys of the kingdom of heaven. That is why a key, not a human figure, crosses the sky. The date is fixed and falls just a few days after the summer solstice, when nights are shortest and summer is in full swing.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of pale glowing dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a large old-fashioned key with an ornate bow
