San Isidro Festival (Madrid)

15 May 2026 — Let's dance a chotis under the stars! Happy San Isidro, Madrid!

San Isidro is the festival of Madrid's patron saint, Isidore the Laborer, a 12th-century farmworker remembered for his piety and humble work. It is held every year on 15 May, and the city celebrates for about a week. Madrileños head out for picnics in the park and on the meadow near the saint's hermitage, sip water from his spring and wear traditional costume. Men in checkered flat caps are chulapos, and women in white headscarves adorned with a carnation and long, fitted dresses are chulapas. Streets fill with music, and couples dance the chotis, a slow city dance that has become a symbol of Madrid. The day is both religious and popular: on 15 May a solemn Mass is held in the saint's honor. The date is fixed in the calendar, and the long evenings of late spring invite you to look for the first stars above the city's squares.
