Saint John's Day

24 June 2026 — May the water bring you health and joy! Happy San Juan!

On 24 June, Christian tradition honors the birth of Saint John the Baptist. He is one of the few saints whose birthday, rather than the day of his death, is celebrated. The date falls six months before Christmas, following the Gospel account that John was born shortly before Jesus. In Mexico the day is known as San Juan. In many places it is customary to bathe in rivers, springs or the sea, or to splash one another with water for health and blessing. The water recalls the baptisms John performed in the River Jordan. The feast falls close to the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, around 21 June, so church customs and folk traditions mingle widely, with bonfires, wreaths and flowers. The eve of the feast, known as Saint John's Eve, is marked with fires in many countries. The sky above shows some of the shortest nights of the year. Today the day recalls the joy of summer and the importance of water.
