San Fermín (Pamplona)
7 July 2026 — White and red in Pamplona! Music, dancing and giants in the streets!
San Fermín is one of Spain's best-known folk festivals. It is held in Pamplona, in Navarre, from 6 to 14 July, in honour of Saint Fermin, a co-patron of Navarre. Its present form grew from the merging of a religious celebration with a trade fair and bull-related events. Participants dress in white with a red neckerchief and sash. The festival opens at noon on 6 July with the chupinazo, a rocket fired from the town hall balcony. Parades of gigantes (giant figures of wood and cloth) and cabezudos (figures with oversized heads) wander the streets, accompanied by brass bands and dancing. On 7 July a solemn procession honours the saint. The date follows the solar calendar and falls in high summer, when nights are short and warm and the sky is full of stars. The festival closes at midnight on 14 July with the song “Pobre de mí” (“Poor me”).
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver giant figure made of bright dots and fine lines like a constellation, striding slowly across the night sky with a glowing red neckerchief as the only touch of colour
