Unification Day

6 September 2026 — Two banners, one sky – stronger together! Happy Unification Day!

On 6 September 1885 (Old Style; 18 September New Style), the Unification of the Principality of Bulgaria with Eastern Rumelia was proclaimed in Plovdiv. Eastern Rumelia was an autonomous province of the Ottoman Empire, created after the Congress of Berlin in 1878, which had left the Bulgarian lands divided. The Plovdiv coup was prepared by activists of the Bulgarian Secret Central Revolutionary Committee, with military units led by Major Danail Nikolaev. Prince Alexander I of Battenberg recognised the Unification and assumed the title “Prince of Northern and Southern Bulgaria”. The Unification is one of the key events in modern Bulgarian history. It was followed by the Serbo-Bulgarian War in November 1885, in which the Bulgarian army prevailed, including at the Battle of Slivnitsa. Today the day is an official public holiday. It is marked with solemn ceremonies, processions, wreath-laying and concerts, above all in Plovdiv. The date is fixed in the Gregorian calendar and does not depend on the phases of the Moon. At the time of the events, however, Bulgaria still used the Julian calendar (Old Style).

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of bright dots and connecting lines, like a constellation: two waving tricolor banners drawn as star-lines glide toward each other and merge into a single flag, trailing a soft glittering tail across the sky
