Kirchweih (Church Fair)

18 October 2026 · movable holiday — The music plays and the carousel spins – come join the fair!

Kirchweih (German for „church consecration“) is a folk festival tied to the anniversary of a local church’s consecration. It began as a church commemoration and over time grew into a lively village fair. In Bavaria it is most often held on the third Sunday of October, but many places keep a different date according to local tradition, and celebrations sometimes last several days. The fair brings music, dancing, carousels and stalls with sweets and regional dishes. In some places a decorated pole is raised and young men climb it for a prize. Special pastries are often baked, and in some regions roast goose is traditional. Its link to the sky is seasonal: it falls in mid-autumn, when days are shortening quickly and communities gather around a shared table before winter. Customs vary from village to village and region to region.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver carousel made of pale glowing dots and fine lines, like a constellation, turning gently as it drifts across the night sky
