Birthday of Rome (Natale di Roma)
21 April 2026 — Ave! Rome is another year older today, and I brought the cake!
According to Roman tradition, the city was founded on 21 April 753 BC by Romulus, and the day is called Natale di Roma (Birthday of Rome). The year 753 BC comes from the chronology of the ancient Roman scholar Marcus Terentius Varro, while the day, 21 April, comes from older tradition. The date is traditional and is not confirmed by archaeology. In antiquity the day coincided with Parilia, a rural festival of shepherds and flocks. Today Rome marks it every year with parades of groups in ancient dress, reenactments with legionaries, gladiators and priests, plus music and celebrations across the city centre. Participants wear togas and armour, and the streets around the Colosseum and the Roman Forum fill with spectators. The date is fixed and falls every year on 21 April – in spring in the Northern Hemisphere, when days are clearly longer than nights.
