Lincoln's Birthday
12 February 2026 — I split rails, not stars! Happy birthday, Abe!
Abraham Lincoln was born on 12 February 1809 in Kentucky and became the 16th President of the United States. He is remembered for leading the country through the Civil War and for the struggle to abolish slavery. In his youth he did manual labor and earned the nickname “Rail Splitter”, which was later widely used in political campaigns. The day is a holiday in some states, but it is not a federal holiday. The federal holiday Washington's Birthday, also known as Presidents' Day, falls on the third Monday of February and in many places honors American presidents more generally. Traditions include speeches, exhibitions, memorial ceremonies and visits to Lincoln monuments. The date is fixed and does not depend on a lunar calendar. And February skies are lovely: bright winter constellations such as Orion and Canis Major are on show.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and thin lines like a constellation: a tall top hat hopping across the night sky, with a small woodcutter's axe tracing its path beside it
