Benito Juárez's Birthday

16 March 2026 · movable holiday — A shepherd boy with a book became president – the law is for everyone!

Benito Juárez was born on 21 March 1806 in the village of San Pablo Guelatao in the state of Oaxaca, into a Zapotec family, an Indigenous people of Mexico. Orphaned young, he worked as a shepherd and, until about the age of twelve, spoke almost no Spanish. He then moved to the city of Oaxaca, studied, became a lawyer and politician, and in 1858 took over the presidency of the country. He is associated with the Reform, the laws that separated church and state and affirmed equality before the law. His best-known saying is: “Among individuals, as among nations, respect for the rights of others is peace.” The day is marked with ceremonies, wreaths and speeches, and schools recall his life story. The holiday is movable, held on the third Monday of March, while his actual birthday, 21 March, falls around the spring equinox, when day and night are nearly equal – a fitting image for the idea of equality.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of bright dots and lines, like a constellation: a young shepherd boy with a book under his arm, walking across the sky followed by a few little sheep drawn in the same glowing points
