Rosh Hashanah

12 September 2026 · movable holiday — Shana Tova! A sweet and peaceful new year to all!

Rosh Hashanah means “head of the year” and marks the start of the Jewish year. It is observed on 1 and 2 Tishrei and begins at sundown on the evening before, because the day in the Jewish calendar starts at nightfall. It opens the Ten Days of Repentance, a time of reflection, forgiveness and good intentions that leads to Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. In the synagogue the shofar, a ram's horn, is sounded as a call to reflection. On the table families place apples dipped in honey for a sweet year, along with a round challah, a symbol of the turning year. People greet one another with “Shana Tova”, meaning “a good year”. The Jewish calendar is lunisolar: its months follow the Moon, and an occasional extra month keeps it in step with the solar year. That is why the holiday falls on a different date each September or October, and the month of Tishrei begins around the new moon.
