Rongali Bihu

14 April 2026 · movable holiday — Happy new year in Assam! Dance with us under the stars!

Bohag Bihu, also called Rongali Bihu, is the Assamese New Year and a festival of spring. It is celebrated in the Indian state of Assam at the turn of the months of Chot and Bohag, around 14–15 April, and lasts several days. It marks the time when spring sowing begins. The first day is often linked to caring for cattle, while the following days are devoted to family, visiting guests and exchanging gifts such as the gamosa (a traditional Assamese cloth with woven motifs). The heart of the festival is Bihu songs and dance: young people dance in bright clothes, often red and gold, to the beat of the dhol (a double-headed drum), and the sound of the pepa (a buffalo-horn pipe) is among its signature sounds. The date follows a solar calendar: Bohag begins when the Sun enters the corresponding sign of the Indian solar calendar, close to mid-April. The festival is thus tied to the turning of the year and the awakening of nature.
