Good Friday (Viernes Santo)
3 April 2026 · movable holiday — A quiet candle in the night – peace and calm to all.
Good Friday (Viernes Santo) is a day of reflection in the Christian tradition. It recalls the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and is part of Holy Week (Semana Santa), which leads to Easter. In Spain it is a public holiday. The processions in Seville, Málaga and Valladolid are especially renowned. In them, brotherhoods (cofradías), often in hooded robes, carry pasos – heavy platforms bearing sculptures of scenes from the Passion – through the streets. The processions move slowly, accompanied by solemn music, and in many cities by candles. The date is movable: Easter falls on the Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox (21 March in the church's calendar), and Good Friday is the Friday before it. So the day is tied to both the Moon and the Sun. In 2026 it falls on 3 April in the Catholic calendar.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver candle figure made of pale points of light and fine lines, like a constellation, with a softly glowing flame and a ribbon of light trailing from it
