Good Friday
3 April 2026 · movable holiday — A quiet morning and a warm bun, shared with those you love.
Good Friday is the day when Christians remember the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It falls on the Friday before Western Easter and is a public holiday across the United Kingdom. The day is quiet and solemn: people attend church services, and many fast or avoid meat. The best-known custom is the hot cross bun, a sweet spiced bun marked with a cross on top. Families share it at breakfast, and the tradition has been known in England since at least the 18th century. The day is also tied to the Moon. Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March, a full moon calculated from church tables that only roughly matches the real one. So Good Friday moves every year; in 2026 it falls on 3 April. In this way, old reckonings based on the Moon still decide when this day of remembrance arrives.
