Eid al-Fitr

20 March 2026 · movable holiday — Eid Mubarak! May your homes glow with joy and peace.

Eid al-Fitr, the „festival of breaking the fast,“ marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting for Muslims. It is celebrated on 1 Shawwal, the first day of the next month in the Islamic lunar calendar (the Hijri calendar). Months in this calendar begin with the sighting of the thin crescent of the new moon, so the exact day depends on moon observation and can differ by a day between countries and communities. Because the lunar year is about 10–11 days shorter than the solar year, the festival moves earlier each year in the Gregorian calendar. The day opens with a special festive prayer, and before it believers give charity to those in need (zakat al-fitr). Visits to family and friends, shared meals, sweets, gifts and the greeting „Eid Mubarak“ („blessed festival“) follow. In Bulgaria and across the Balkans the holiday is known as Ramazan Bayram and brings families together.
