Rama Navami

26 March 2026 · movable holiday — The cradle sways gently – joy and peace to every home!

Rama Navami is a Hindu festival marking the birth of Rama, regarded in tradition as the seventh avatar of Vishnu. It falls on the ninth day of the waxing moon (Shukla Paksha) in the month of Chaitra, usually in March or April, so its date shifts each year with the lunisolar calendar. It concludes the nine-day Chaitra Navratri. Devotees visit temples, sing hymns, read from the epic Ramayana and often fast. In many temples a small cradle holding an image of the infant Rama is gently rocked as a sign of joy. Tradition says Rama was born at midday, so the main rituals take place around that hour. Ayodhya and Bhadrachalam are well-known places of celebration. The sky is tied to the festival through the lunar calendar: the day is counted from the new moon that opens the bright half of Chaitra, and the ninth lunar day after it is Rama Navami. The exact date for any year is checked in a Hindu almanac (panchanga).
