Raksha Bandhan
28 August 2026 · movable holiday — Tie me on your brother's wrist, and your love will keep him safe on his way!
Raksha Bandhan, meaning the bond of protection, is an Indian festival celebrating the love between sisters and brothers. On the full-moon day of the month of Shravana, usually in August, a sister ties a decorated thread or bracelet, the rakhi, around her brother's wrist and wishes him health and happiness. In return he gives her a gift and promises to protect her. The custom is not limited to blood relatives: rakhis are also tied on cousins, close friends and neighbours who share a brotherly bond. The festival follows the Hindu lunisolar calendar, so its date moves each year against the Gregorian (the common solar) calendar. Much like the Bulgarian martenitsa, the rakhi is a thread worn on the wrist as a token of good wishes and protection. People mark the day with sweets, family meals and visits. In 2026 the full moon falls on 28 August.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and lines, like a constellation: a small woven rakhi bracelet with a ring of tiny stars and long tassels trailing behind it like a comet's tail, drifting across the night sky
