Pushkar Fair

17 November 2026 · movable holiday — Jingle-jingle! The camel strides to Pushkar – a fair awaits under the full moon!

The Pushkar Fair, also called Pushkar Mela, takes place in the small town of Pushkar in Rajasthan, India. It is one of the largest camel and livestock fairs in the world. Every year traders and herders arrive with thousands of camels, horses and cattle. The programme includes trading, camel races, music, folk dances and contests for the most beautifully decorated animal. The event ends with the full moon of Kartik Purnima in the Hindu lunar calendar, usually in October or November. During these days pilgrims bathe in the sacred Pushkar Lake and light lamps along its shores. The dates change every year because they follow the lunar calendar: the fair is tied to a moon phase rather than a fixed day. That is why our camel sets off across the sky just as the moon grows nearly full and the desert glows silver.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure of a camel made of bright dots and fine lines, like a constellation, wearing a necklace of glimmering star-beads and tiny bells
